I am Robert Alden Harrison.

All of my paintings start out as haze and shadow, slowly pulling the subject into view. Eventually, through the confusing first layers of paint, there will be the form of a jaw, a neck, the particular set of a brow, and before long there will be a full person there, almost leaning off of the canvas, and I will stand up from the easel and drink more coffee before coming back to make a hundred soft amendments to the image. In my mind, a thousand lessons, a world of observed experiences, and undercurrents of emotion are brought to bear and ensure every work is entirely unique from another.
